Rural Southland is the backbone of our region — rich in knowledge and talent, hard-working people, and community spirit. The Southland Rural Fund is a long-term endowment created to support the future of our rural communities by backing local solutions to local challenges.
This fund exists to sustain what matters most: the wellbeing of people, the strength of local industry, the protection of our land and water, and the ability for future generations to thrive here.
Why this matters
Southland’s rural towns, farms, and industries have always shown strength through change and adversity. But rural communities also face real pressures — from isolation and limited access to services, to the challenge of attracting and keeping skilled people, especially in farming, trades, and essential services.
The Southland Rural Fund is about long-term support and enablement. It’s here to ensure rural Southland remains a great place to live, work, raise a family, and grow old while also remaining economically positive — no matter where you come from or how you contribute.
What the fund supports
The fund invests in projects and programmes that:
Improve Wellbeing - By supporting initiatives that enhance health, connection, and belonging across all ages and culture.
Build Local skills and Talent - Including opportunities for youth, migrants, women, and those in essential industries.
Promote Rural Education - In farming, finance, leadership, and intergenerational resilience.
Care for the Environment - Supporting community-led conservation and sustainable land management rooted in kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
Improve Access - To essential services to support equitable access for remote and rural residents.
Strengthen Rural Organisations - So they can deliver local programmes and lead community change.
How the fund work
Contestable Fund
As this fund grows over time community groups & organisations will be able to apply through regular funding rounds.
Locally Delivered
Projects must be rooted in rural Southland, with local leadership and benefit to local people.
Regionally Significant
The fund will support initiatives that address shared challenges and opportunities across the region.
Flexible & Future-Focused
The fund is designed to adapt over time, supporting what rural communities need most — now and in the years ahead.
