Who are we?

Southland Foundation is one of 18 community foundations in New Zealand. Our primary focus is to provide a simple and long-lasting way for people to help charitable causes in the Southland Community. The smarter giving model of Community Foundations ensures these gifts have the maximum impact now and in the future.

The Southland Foundation is guided by a group of voluntary trustees who are passionate about Southland and are committed to strengthening our region. We are locally controlled and independent.

“Our Region” is defined as the area within the boundaries of the Southland Region, defined by the boundaries of the Territorial Authorities, Invercargill City Council, Southland District Council and Gore District Council.

How does it work?

The Southland Foundation will pool and invest donated money and distribute a portion of the income generated by those funds to charitable causes and community organisations within the Southland region, leaving a lasting impact for generations to come.

Donors can contribute to the Southland Impact fund or other existing funds relevant to their wishes with a one-off donation or a gift in their will.

Donors can also establish their own named endowment fund with gifts of more the $100,000. Donors who establish Named Endowment Funds with Southland Foundation can specify the cause or organisation who will receive the money, or the way in which it is distributed for example, through a scholarship. These funds are entirely donor-driven or purpose driven depending on the areas of interest chosen by each donor.

A skilled Investment Advisory Committee along with our professional investment company are responsible in ensuring that the value of the funds are maintained in real terms in perpetuity, allowing the legacy of the gift to remain forever.

While most people don’t think of themselves as philanthropists, I find that most people do want to make a difference. No client of mine has ever been upset at me suggesting giving as an option, and some are very thankful for suggestions on how they can structure their giving for the long-term.
